Why CHANGE interests me? THINK, MEET, ACT, CHANGE!

My name is Bo┼żana and I am a student of the faculty of Law. From time to time I volunteer for associations and organisations in the field of social entrepreneurship and civil society, whose main goal is to improve and upgrade quality of life for society as a whole.

During my volunteering activities I had the chance to see and be surprised by the extent to which society is closed to differences, no matter whether we’re talking about somebody’s skin colour, nationality or religion. While volunteering I also heard about “CHANGE ÔÇô students and migrants together for inclusive societies,” and I wanted to find out more and be part of it.

Sadly, there are a lot of experiences of war in my family, and many of my family members were refugees at one point too, so I’m very conscious of the importance of projects like CHANGE. Nobody wants to become a refugee, to run away from their own home and seek protection elsewhere. It’s the social responsibility of all of us to help and protect these people, not turn a blind eye to their pain and suffering because they’re different or not part of one of our “groups.”

We’re all familiar with generalizations and prejudice caused by fear of the unknown. In 2015, during my time in high school, the migrant crisis began and started to affect Croatia, a transit country at the time.

I remember a question one of my teachers asked: “Bo┼żana, what do you think about this situation?” A little confused, and a little hurt (though I didn’t know why), I answered: “My mother was also a refugee.”

Sometimes we seem to forget that we are all human beings. All equal individuals of the same species, with our differences. Everyone is their own person, with their own beliefs and desire for acceptance, and equal human rights. I believe that we need to build a tolerant and inclusive society, that will thrive and be peaceful, and I welcome any project that is a step towards a society of solidarity.

ZAŠTO MI JE CHANGE ZANIMLJIV? PROMISLI, SUSRETNI, DJELUJ, PROMIJENI!
