Fleeing to be Myself

Story of Bashiir is the grand prize winner of Centro Astalli’s literary contest. It is a story about life, love, human rights, homosexuality, cultural stigma, freedom, family relationships, persecution. The protagonist, Bashiir, flees his country because of his sexual orientation, but also because – like all refugees, fundamentally – he wants to be happy, he wants to be himself, he wants to live free and have his dignity recognised. He wants a new beginning.

Here is an excerpt from the story:

Of love, I have made my life, and of love, my nation has made a condemnation. This was the sentence that kept echoing in my head. I would chant it like a prayer, while the boat on which I sailed headed towards a world that was completely new to me, accompanied by the murmur of waves in the silence of the night, and the murmur of those who, driven by hope, made the same journey into the unknown as me.

Since childhood, sitting on the bed in my room, I always imagined what life would have been like if I had been another person. I could have accomplished many of my dreams, perhaps: become a pilot, a football player, an astronaut, or maybe a politician. Change the world. Now, I might have that chance. In truth, I never really wanted a new life; I liked mine, but my country did not.

My name is Bashiir, “bearer of good news” – at least, that’s what my mother used to say. But it’s a fact that, one afternoon when I came back from school, when my mother jokingly asked, “So, are there any cute girls in your class?” and I replied, “No, but there is a boy” – that was far from good news.
